Frequently Asked Questions
Stains and dirt
In the event that something spills on the cowhide, attempt to wipe it off right away. Use a sponge or a clean, dry cloth. Brushing with a moist cloth is the most effective way to remove dried dirt. To remove persistent stains, try using a small amount of natural detergent (like green soap). Be careful not to get the underside of the cowhide too wet, as it might dry out quickly. Did the cowhide get wet anyway? Simply let the leather dry at ambient temperature.
How do I maintain a cowhide?
Taking good care of your cowhide is crucial if you purchased one. If you correctly care the cowhide, you will be able to enjoy it for many years to come. But how can you effectively care for your skin?
If the cowhide is dirty, simply vacuum it. However, do this while the hair is still in place to keep it looking its best. If possible, pat the hide. It is critical to keep the skin sand-free since sand grains can damage the hairs and cause the skin to go bald sooner. Unlike sheep hides, cowhide does not need to be brushed out.
How does the tanning process work?
The tanning process begins with the supply of pickled/salted hides from the butcher.
These hides are placed in tanning vats. The hides are chrome-tanned. This guarantees that no microorganisms remain on the skin. It also guarantees that the skin is protected.
After tanning, the hides are temporarily preserved until they can be stretched.
Stretching guarantees that the hide does not shrink and remains flat throughout the drying process.
The final treatment step is to inspect and trim the hides. Scars, insect bites, and burn marks are all possible impairments to the hide. However, this is part of the cowhide, which gives each hide its own character and uniqueness. After all of these stages are done, the skins are sent to us.
What is the quality of the skins?
In order to ensure the highest quality possible, we personally choose the cow skins. It is still a natural substance, though. This implies that there may be cuts or scars on the hides.
Insect bites and barbed wire can both leave scars. The slaughtering procedure may result in nicks. A little patch is then applied to the back to cover these wounds. This is quite common, and the back of many cow hides has these areas.
Whether your rug bears the imprint of a chair, table, or sofa. A bag of ice cubes should then be placed on the imprint. Brush the cowhide with the brushes when the ice has melted.
Dehydration
It is important to softly spritz the cowhide's skin with water once a month to keep it from drying out. The best tool for this is a plant sprayer. To prevent the cowhide from drying out completely, take care not to get it too moist. It is advisable to spray the skin once a week if you have an underfloor heating system.
